The Difference Between Trend Gyms and Results-Driven Fitness Training
The fitness industry loves to label everything. Right now, a trendy label is "boutique gym."
It seems every week, there is a new “boutique” gym opening up. People hear it is trending, and some business people decide to open a boutique gym, hiring a few inexperienced trainers to run group classes. Sounds simple.
Jeff opened his first gym in California in 1999. Jeff and Ritah opened Flash Fitness in 2012.
People look at what we do, see our group dynamics, and call us a “boutique gym.” They think we fit into a neat little trend category.
They are wrong. That is their label of us…not ours.
We are not a boutique gym. We are personal trainers with a high demand and found a way to train more people.
That is NOT the same.
The Real Story of How We Built Flash Fitness
Actually, when this started, boutique gyms did not even exist. I was a personal trainer, plain and simple. The process wasn't driven by a marketing funnel or because organizations ACSM decided boutique gyms will be trendy in the future;
It was purely organic, fueled by supply and demand:
* We got undeniable results for one person.
* Their friends asked if they could train with us too or join their session.
* We said yes. Three clients became five, then six.
Our business grew entirely through a web of human trust.
For example….Jennifer got results and brought Kelly. Kelly got results and brought Gaynor and Belinda. Those four told their husbands, and suddenly I was training Ian, Tom, Allen, and Carl in another class. Carl brought Dale and Matthias. Dale brought Christy who brought Scott, who brought Robin. Robin brought her friend Danielle from the US Embassy. Danielle brought five of her embassy friends, then started bringing people from the American Women’s Club, who then brought their connections from the Australian New Zealand Women’s Club…well, you get the point.
We never set out to build a “group fitness” brand. We were just trainers in massive demand because our ability to get people remarkable, noticeable results…,and those clients created a constant stream of referrals.
This isn't a marketing strategy. This is our actual client referral web…real people, real relationships, and decades of combined results.
The Trend Graveyard in Silom and Sathorn
Not long after that, other gyms looked at our success, saw the groups, and missed the point entirely. They copied the structure, spent millions on fancy facilities, and called it a boutique gym.
As usual…the fitness industry just didn’t “get it.” They focused entirely on the wrapper...the “trend.” The industry made it about “capitalizing” on the new trend of group training. They thought…group training….with the neon lighting, the interior decor, and add some trendy branding. But if aesthetics were the secret to survival, those places would still be here.
Instead, we’ve watched massive names and trendy concepts come and go right here in the Silom and Sathorn areas. High-profile brands like The LAB Silom, Twist, and F45 among others open with massive hype in the area, only to close their doors and disappear.
Why? Because when a business is built entirely on a trend, it dies when the trend changes.
You know what NEVER goes out of trend? Getting people actual results they and everyone around them can see. Changing people’s lives. Providing a community that builds upon itself for the RIGHT reasons. Not because it’s trendy.
14 Years on a 5th Floor
This July 1st, marks 14 years since we opened our doors. We didn’t start with any venture capital ...no massive storefront on the ground floor. We didn’t even advertise our opening. We didn’t pay influencers to come to a “soft opening.” Heck, we started as and continue as SMALL GYM, BIG RESULTS on the 5th floor above a restaurant.
We didn't do any marketing or have a marketing budget; we had a dedication to getting people results.
We have thrived nearly a decade and a half in one of the most competitive fitness markets in the world because we know the actual secret: It has nothing to do with the decor or the equipment.
